low cost internet service providers

AOL Keeps Growing... and Growing

Too early to tell, maybe, too early to say. Somehow, however, in spite of free ISPs, in spite of broadband expansion, in spite of the fact that AOL costs more even than other pay ISPs, AOL continues to expand its membership.

The High-Speed Decline of the ISP, Part I

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) helped build the modern Internet , making them pillars of the online experience. But while ISPs rock, they do not rule. That's why the companies are hurting and their stocks have been stomped -- and ensuring open access to fatter pipes won't change this. Their moment for evolving into something more has passed, their evolution to date having left them with neither legs nor stamina, and little to offer competitively.

The High-Speed Decline of the ISP, Part II

The reality is that most ISPs are underdeveloped as businesses and services. They lack the necessary resources to either organically develop or acquire what's needed to competitively differentiate themselves. What gets lost in the talk about consumer choice and the benefits of ISP competition -- whether the arguments are made sincerely or cynically -- is that the would-be competitors don't have much to offer.

AOL's Broadband Dinner

Since I hopped on the Fool train, I have spent less and less time gawking at the daily machinations and gyrations of my poor, perpetually under-performing, personal portfolio. I know everybody says that they don't look, but I really don't (well, not very often anyway) these days. It's not just that I'm busy (though I assure you, I work 14-hour, blood-and-sweat days. nudge, nudge, wink, wink), but because here I'm encouraged to try to gain actual insight into companies.

AOL Blinks

After losing some 2 million subscribers last year, Time Warner's (NYSE: TWX) America Online finally blinked. The world's largest ISP yesterday launched a new low-cost dial-up service under the Netscape banner, hoping to keep some of the subscribers who are fleeing to cheaper competitors.

Freeserve Sale in Question

U.K. Internet service provider Freeserve PLC's (Nasdaq: FREE) hopes that the T-Online International division of Germany 's Deutsche Telekom (NYSE: DT) would buy the company were dashed, according to news reports that sent the shares falling in overseas trading this morning.

Metromedia Fibe

Fixed-rate bandwidth supplier Metromedia Fiber Network (Nasdaq: MFNX) posted its Q1 results today, turning in a loss of $0.16 per share. Seeing as the company is firmly in the development stage of the business maturity spectrum while it builds out its end-to-end optical network game plan, no one is expecting profits anytime soon.

PSINet Grabs More With Metamor

Internet service provider (ISP) and services company PSINet (Nasdaq: PSIX) went into deeper waters for its latest acquisition, netting consulting firm Metamor Worldwide (Nasdaq: MMWW) for $1.9 billion in stock.

If you've never heard of VoIP, get ready to change the way you think about long-distance phone calls. VoIP can turn a standard Internet connection into a way to place free phone calls. VoIP is a revolutionary technology that has the potential to completely rework the world's phone systems

No need of phone lines or any type of terrestrial lines: VSAT Broadband

Before anything, what is VSAT internet? Well VSAT is short for “Very Small Aperture Terminal” which is short for a 2-way satellite ground station, with a dish antenna that is smaller than 3 meters. With that said, VSAT broadband is the same as saying satellite internet. This type of broadband service is preferred in location where terrestrial internet access is not available and in locations which move frequently. In the US DirecWay and Starband are the leading providers with VSAT technology
